About

For this project I interviewed my friend Maleik Njoroge for a Museum Victoria anthology publication reflecting on three seasons of their Culture Makers programming. We talked about “Chess Without Borders” a weekend event Maleik ran at the Immigration Museum in 2023.

Whittling down our 90 minute conversation into a 1500 words I then illustrated a collection of accompanying images. Influcened by the art style of MF Doom comics, at Maleik’s request, I added a halftone dot matrix’s, thicker lines with darker shadows than you would normally see in my work. It was great seeing how it looked against the additional graphic design within the final publication.

Something that didn’t make it to print, were these 360 turnaround animations of Maleik’s ATAB.Lab Chess pieces. Each shape designed to remind the player know how to use it in game play.

Maleik said something that became the title of the interview “Home For Me Is Chess” I instantly saw a house shaped chess board.

A home to carry wherever you go that you can share with anyone who will play you. The final image barely changed from my rough because I saw it so clearly.

Maleik tried to get some Ray Ban meta sunglasses to film POV footage of matches. While it didn’t pan out, I could however still animate them for the publication.

In response to our conversation, I illustrated this hero image of Maleik with his Durrie Chess set and how he envisioned the “Chess Without Borders” day initially. Outside in the Immigration Museums courtyard. Long tables like a banquet.
