two punks go out for a nice meal at a fancy restaurant
Illustrated Print Commission | Exhibition
About
Made in collaboration with Australian artist Simon Zoric, “Two punks go out for a nice meal at a fancy restaurant” is a pair of illustrations emulating the style of the daily cartoons found in The New Yorker. I illustrated them digitally however they were then photo-lithographed on to Somerset paper & framed for his solo show at Gertrude Glasshouse, Pig In A Poke.

Zoric had a very specific vision for how these illustrations worked within his entire exhibition. So this brief was very thorough about layout, art direction & even character design.
In the first panel we see two punks greeting the maître d'at a cliched French fine dining establishment. One punk using the offensive hand gesture of two fingers up, in order to indicate they wanted a table for two.
My initial attempts were too 1980’s North American, 1980’s punk for his taste. So I pivoted towards a more classic British 1970’s attire & we agreed to change the prespective so the viewer is entering the room with the guests. Almost behind them in the line.
Once the fashion and perspective was in place, I started shading the image for values of light and dark. Eventually testing a muted colour palette before agreeing a classic black & white, ink wash. In the style of a “new yorker” cartoon made the most sense.
The second panel shows two punks now inside the restaurant trashing their table. With other diners and wait staff completely unfazed by their presence.
Finally Simon had the images Photo-lithographed creating an even greater depth of colour & texture than just having my digital drawings ink-jet printed on to paper.
